Ways to work abroad

There are several possibilities for a PhD student to work abroad:
  • joint doctorate, which allows you to do a doctorate jointly with another university abroad
  • joint supervision of a thesis, which allows you to do a doctorate jointly with another university in France
  • research trip
  • participation in international symposia and conferences.
The Université de Lyon supports doctoral schools in their desire to become more international.
To do so, it has signed partnership agreements with the University of Ottawa, the University of Tokyo, the ECNU-East China Normal University and FUDAN (Shanghai) and TECHNION (Israel), which facilitate the establishment of joint doctorates and exchanges.

Funding working abroad

Working abroad imposes additional expenses (travel, stay, possibly visa and insurance) and therefore requires specific funding.

A longer stay requires that you seek funding from the many existing programmes at a very early stage, 6 months to 1 year beforehand.
